Why an iPhone HDR video can look different after sharing

By Juste Tools · Published

An HDR video can look different in another player, editor or social app because the destination may handle brightness and colour differently. Keep the original and test the actual sharing route before deciding a clip is broken. A preview in one app is not a reliable guide to every viewer's screen.

Compare the same clip

Watch the original on the iPhone, then the exported file and the uploaded result. Use the same moment in the clip and look at bright areas, skin and shadows. This tells you whether the change appeared during editing or only after upload.

  • Keep one untouched original for comparison.
  • Check the editor's input and export colour settings.
  • Test a short upload using the audience setting you intend to use.

Choose a predictable delivery format

If your destination expects standard dynamic range, use an editor's supported SDR conversion rather than merely stripping metadata. If you prefer a simpler new-recording workflow, review the HDR option available in Apple's Camera settings on supported devices.

Camera features and labels depend on the model and iOS version. A third-party camera app has its own controls; verify the actual recording and export rather than assuming it follows Settings, Camera.

Check two streams independently

When combining rear-camera views, confirm that the two source files look consistent before cutting between them. Different lighting in each frame can already make a cut feel uneven. Apply an edit intentionally, then review the final exported video in its destination instead of relying only on the editing timeline.
