How to dictate a written WhatsApp message on iPhone

By Juste Tools · Published

To send written words rather than an audio message, put the cursor in WhatsApp's message field and use your keyboard's dictation control. The chat app's own microphone can start a voice message instead. Test the difference in a draft before sending.

Start in the text field

Open the conversation you intend to use, tap the message field and bring up the keyboard. Select Apple's keyboard for built-in Dictation or switch to a third-party keyboard you have already configured. Make sure the action you start is keyboard dictation, not the audio-message button.

  • Speak one short sentence.
  • Stop recording and wait for the words.
  • Confirm that the draft contains text before using Send.

Read the recipient and the wording

Dictation does not verify that you opened the right conversation. Check the recipient as well as names, dates and numbers in the draft. Correct punctuation and remove any spoken asides that should not be sent.

If text entry works in Notes but fails in the chat field, test the app and keyboard combination separately. Interface placement can change with app versions, so use the visible draft and recording indicators rather than memorising a screenshot.

Keep audio and text workflows separate

An existing voice message is not the same as a new dictated message. This guide describes entering your own words into a text field; it does not promise import or transcription of another person's audio attachment. Use the tool that supports the task you actually need.
