How to turn on voice typing on iPhone
By Juste Tools · Published
For basic voice typing, try the Dictation built into the iPhone keyboard first. Enable it in Settings, General, Keyboard, then use the keyboard's microphone in a text field. A separate voice keyboard is useful when you want its additional editing or tone workflow.
Test the built-in option
Open an ordinary note, place the cursor in the text area and tap the Dictation microphone. Speak one short sentence, stop and inspect the text. This gives you a simple baseline before troubleshooting a more complicated app or message composer.
- Confirm Enable Dictation is on if the microphone is missing.
- Choose a keyboard language appropriate to your speech.
- Check the resulting words before sending them anywhere.
Distinguish text from recorded audio
The microphone beside a chat message can record a voice message instead of entering text. Use the keyboard's Dictation control when your goal is written words. A note app is a useful place to learn the difference without accidentally sending something.
Availability, language support and processing vary with the device and system. Apple's built-in Dictation and a cloud-based keyboard can have different internet and permission requirements.
Choose a keyboard for the task
If basic transcription is enough, the native feature may meet your needs. If you want text polished into a chosen tone, compare a dedicated keyboard's features and privacy information. Installing an app and enabling its keyboard are separate steps; do not expect it to appear automatically in every field.
