iPhone dictation not working: a short diagnostic checklist
By Juste Tools · Published
First identify which dictation tool is failing: Apple's keyboard microphone, a third-party keyboard or an app's audio recording. They do not share every setting. Test a short sentence in an ordinary note before changing several permissions at once.
Find where the failure begins
Do not repeatedly send test messages to somebody else; use a private draft or note.
- If the keyboard microphone is absent, check the native Dictation setting.
- If there is no recording, check microphone access for the app that records.
- If speech is recorded but text never returns, check the tool's connection requirements.
- If text appears in a note but not a particular app, test that app's text field separately.
Reduce the test to one sentence
Speak in a quieter place with the phone microphone unobstructed. Try without an attached headset if the problem appears only with that headset. Confirm the language selection and inspect exactly where text is inserted.
For Clavio, check internet access, its microphone permission and keyboard Full Access. Turning on Apple's Enable Dictation setting alone does not grant those permissions to Clavio.
Keep useful support details
If the issue remains, note the iPhone model, iOS version, app version, text-field app and whether the same test worked elsewhere. A description such as recording starts but no text arrives is more useful than does not work. Share a harmless sample rather than private messages or audio when asking for help.
