How to choose the language for iPhone dictation

By Juste Tools · Published

For Apple's Dictation, the selected keyboard language helps determine the dictation language. Add or switch to the appropriate keyboard, then test a short sentence. A website translated into a language is not itself proof that every dictation tool supports that speech language.

Choose the language before the test

Use iPhone keyboard settings to add the language you need, then switch to it in a normal text field. Speak a sentence that includes an ordinary word and a proper name. Check both spelling and punctuation.

  • Distinguish a language from its regional variant when options exist.
  • Use the same keyboard selection throughout a test.
  • Check the tool's current supported languages rather than assuming automatic detection.

Test mixed-language phrases carefully

A name, brand or borrowed term can be transcribed differently from the rest of a sentence. Read those terms after dictating. If you alternate languages frequently, test that exact workflow before using it for a long message.

Punctuation command words and automatic punctuation support can differ by language. Do not copy an English command list and expect every command to behave identically in another locale.

Separate interface language and speech support

An app may offer a translated interface while using a separate language selection for speech. Check both the setup screens and current product information. If a particular language or regional variety is essential, verify it with a harmless sample rather than a private or time-sensitive message.
