How to switch to a third-party keyboard on iPhone
By Juste Tools · Published
Installing a keyboard app and selecting its keyboard are separate steps. Add the keyboard in iPhone settings, then use the keyboard switch control in a supported text field. Some fields deliberately use only Apple's system keyboard.
Add and select the keyboard
After installing the app, open Settings, General, Keyboard, Keyboards and add the third-party keyboard from the available list. Complete the app's own setup requirements. In a normal note, use the globe or keyboard-switch control to choose the keyboard you want.
- Test in an ordinary text field first.
- Read any Full Access explanation separately from installation.
- Keep Apple's keyboard available for fields or tasks that need it.
Understand restricted fields
Secure password fields show the system keyboard. Some phone-number fields also do not allow a custom keyboard, and an app can restrict third-party keyboards. A keyboard disappearing only in one of those situations is not necessarily an installation failure.
Do not try to work around a secure field by dictating a password into an ordinary note. Use the normal password-entry or password-manager workflow.
Diagnose the right layer
If the keyboard does not appear in a normal note, revisit whether it was added and selected. If it appears but dictation fails, check the app's audio and connection requirements. Keyboard selection, microphone access and a network-dependent transcription step are different parts of the setup.
