What to check before enabling a cloud voice keyboard

By Juste Tools · Published

A cloud voice keyboard has a different processing model from a purely local typing tool. Before enabling it, read what data its service needs, where its privacy information is available and which permissions make its features possible. Full Access is a capability, not a privacy guarantee.

Understand the permission's purpose

Apple's custom-keyboard Full Access setting permits network and shared-container capabilities. What a developer does with those capabilities depends on the product and its policies. Do not assume that a keyboard is offline just because it is installed on your phone.

  • Read the App Store privacy information and the developer's policy.
  • Check whether speech processing requires internet access.
  • Look for a clear recording indicator and a way to stop recording.

Start with harmless material

Test a short sentence containing no private identifiers, credentials or sensitive content. Confirm where the returned words appear and whether the app keeps a history. A feature list is not enough to establish a retention or deletion promise; use the current policy or ask support when that matters to you.

You can choose another tool if the processing model does not suit your task. Native Dictation has its own device, language and privacy conditions, which should be reviewed separately.

Keep the final choice under your control

Use an ordinary text field for the test, stop recording intentionally and review the draft. Avoid dictating unrelated speech while another person is speaking nearby. Permission setup should be a deliberate choice based on the feature you want, rather than a collection of switches enabled without explanation.
