How to choose and test a Mac dictation shortcut
By Juste Tools · Published
Use the dictation shortcut shown in your own Mac settings rather than relying on a shortcut copied from another person's keyboard. Check how it starts and stops recording in an ordinary note. The shortcut must be both easy to use and unlikely to conflict with your regular work.
Find the native shortcut
In System Settings, Keyboard, review the Dictation shortcut selection. Test it with the cursor in a note, then inspect the entered text. A different keyboard or a changed function-key setup can make a remembered shortcut behave differently.
- Use the configured action exactly as shown.
- Check whether another app responds to the same key combination.
- Repeat the test with the external keyboard you actually use.
Separate app shortcuts from system shortcuts
A third-party dictation app has its own activation settings. Changing the macOS Dictation shortcut does not automatically configure Clavio's push-to-talk or wake phrase. Test each tool separately, so you know which recording indicator belongs to which action.
For a hold-to-talk workflow, confirm that releasing the key ends the capture as expected. For a toggle workflow, confirm the stop action before using it in a meeting or shared space.
Avoid conflicting shortcuts
Do not reuse a combination essential to the editor you work in if it creates an accidental action. Choose a supported option in the dictation app's settings, then test in your usual app. Keep a note of the chosen shortcut if you switch between different computers; their configurations may differ.
