Mac dictation not working: find the failing step

By Juste Tools · Published

When Mac dictation fails, check activation, audio input and text insertion separately. Test one short sentence in a normal note before changing several settings. Knowing whether the tool never starts, cannot hear you or cannot insert text makes troubleshooting much more precise.

Check activation and audio

For native Dictation, confirm it is enabled and use the configured shortcut. Check the selected microphone and its input response in Sound settings. Test without a headset if the problem occurs only when it is connected.

  • Keep the microphone unobstructed.
  • Choose the speech language you intend to use.
  • Reduce background noise for the test.
  • Check the connection requirements of the tool in use.

Test a normal text field

If the app appears to record but inserts no text, confirm where the cursor is. Try a note, then the target app. A custom editor, secure field or app-specific input behaviour can differ from a standard text area.

For Clavio, microphone access and Accessibility access serve different parts of the workflow. Hearing speech successfully does not establish that the app can insert text at the cursor.

Keep the evidence useful

Record the Mac model, macOS and app version, activation method, selected microphone and the result in both text fields. Avoid repeatedly dictating a large private document as a test. A harmless sentence and a clear description of the failing step are enough to start a support conversation.
