Where to check microphone permission on Mac

By Juste Tools · Published

Microphone permission lets an app capture audio; it does not by itself choose the input device or guarantee text insertion. On Mac, review app access in System Settings, Privacy & Security, Microphone. Grant access only to the app whose recording feature you intend to use.

Check the intended app

Find the app in the microphone list and review whether access is enabled. Follow a visible restart instruction if the system or app asks for it. Do not grant every app access as a generic troubleshooting step.

  • Check the app name carefully.
  • Test with a short, non-sensitive sentence.
  • Observe the recording indicator while the microphone is in use.

Check the input separately

An app can have permission while listening to an unintended device. Review Sound, Input and the app's own microphone selection if it provides one. Speak normally and look for an input response. A connected headset can change the available audio path.

If an app has never requested access and does not appear in the list, use its normal recording setup and follow the resulting system prompt. Do not assume a missing entry is repaired by changing an unrelated permission.

Understand the privacy boundary

Microphone permission describes access to audio. The app's own processing, retention and network behaviour are separate questions covered by its policies. Stop capture when you finish the test and avoid recording other people without agreement. For a dictation tool, confirm the resulting text as well as the recording indicator.
