How to record a homemade meal in a food diary
By Juste Tools · Published
For a homemade meal, distinguish the recipe from the amount you actually served. Keep a short ingredient note and record your portion separately. This is a way to organise a diary entry, not a recommendation about portion size or what a recipe should contain.
Keep the recipe basis clear
Write the ingredients and quantities you know. Include additions such as sauces in the description instead of hiding them inside a vague dish name. Label any unknown quantity as approximate.
- Keep raw and cooked quantities clearly named.
- Note whether a packet value refers to a dry product or prepared food.
- Do not count both the finished dish and its ingredients as separate versions of the same meal.
Record the served amount separately
If a recipe makes four equal servings and you record one, the arithmetic basis is one quarter of that recipe. Equal servings are an assumption; when the servings differ, record the amount you know instead. A shared serving bowl does not make every plate identical.
You can keep the recipe in an ordinary note even if your chosen app has no recipe-saving function. Do not assume an app supports recipe import or batch recipes without checking its current features.
Review a matching app entry
Search results for a dish can describe a different preparation. Compare the name, ingredients and units before selecting one. A generic estimate can be labelled as such; it should not look like a precise calculation of your own recipe. The most useful record preserves what is known and what was only estimated.
